Ch. 46 Promote the General Welfare

"This dullness of vision regarding the importance of the general welfare to the individual is the measure of the failure of our schools and churches to teach the spiritual significance of genuine democracy." Henry A. Wallace "...promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity..." These words from the Preamble to the United States Constitution establish a fundamental promise and purpose of our government. The founders recognized that a nation's strength lies not only in its defense capabilities or economic power, but in the collective well-being of its citizens. The phrase "general Welfare" was deliberately chosen... not just the welfare of the privileged 1%, but the welfare of the people as a whole. Yet throughout our history, particularly in recent decades, we have seen a deliberate disconnect between this constitutional promise and the policies enacted by our leadership.  This chapter examines three cr...

Ch. 45 Provide for the Common Defense

"To 'provide for the common defense' today means protecting our citizens from all existential threats—whether they come from abroad or arise from our own policies and practices that endanger our climate, our communities, and our children's future." Justice William O. Douglas There's a profound disconnect in how we conceptualize "common defense" in America today.  When most people think of this concept in the Constitution, they likely think of protecting citizens from foreign invasion or conquest. Today, we spend more on military defense than the next nine countries combined, yet some of the biggest threats to the survival of humanity come not from foreign armies, but from environmental degradation and domestic gun violence. Rethinking What We Defend Against The threats facing America's youth today aren't soldiers marching across our borders. Instead, we're confronting: Climate change;  without a doubt the most serious existential threat t...

Messaging Circle Script

Invitation to Join Our Messaging Circle Dear Fellow Change-Maker, I'm reaching out to invite you to collaborate in a critical effort to amplify our collective impact. Those who oppose positive change, in favor of an Extractive economy and profit for the few, have succeeded through a decades long, unified messaging campaign - from Friedman's shareholder supremacy and the Powell Memo, to today's media ecosystem.  One consistent, simple message repeated relentlessly over the last 50 years. Meanwhile, our side comprises millions of individuals across 249+ movements, all speaking different languages while pulling in slightly different directions.  We have thousands of messages; they have one. This is why we're losing. The time for fragmentation is over. We know which actions create the future we want. Community wealth building. Regenerative practices. Just transitions.  The solutions exist. We just need more people to act on them. However, this requires turning our greatest ...

Ch. 44 Domestic Tranquility

"People in power are trying to convince us that the villain in our American story is each other. But that is not our story. That is not who we are. That's not our America. Our United States of America is not about us versus them. It's about we the people."  - Camila Alves When our Founding Fathers added the phrase "insure domestic tranquility," they probably never imagined that this would be one of the most contested battlegrounds in modern American society.  Today, the concept of domestic tranquility no longer reflects its original context of preventing interstate conflicts. It has become the focal point of a an existential struggle between two competing visions of American society: one that works for everyone, and one that preserves existing power structures and inequality. That 3.5% As we discussed in the previous chapter, history tells us something about social movements. It only takes 3.5% of a population (when unified and purposeful) to create transfo...

Connection Engine One Pager

Imagine a world where economies are based on our shared well-being. What if the next economic revolution isn't about protest or policy, but about proving there's a better way? Don’t believe it? Right now, a quiet transformation is already underway. Employee-owned businesses are generating 92% higher median household wealth for workers . Driver-owned cooperatives are putting 80% of fares directly into drivers' pockets. Citizens are working with government to create wellbeing economy ecosystems in major cities. And purpose-driven enterprises worldwide are showing that profit and positive impact aren't just compatible—they're synergistic. This isn't just theory. It's happening. But too many change-makers don't know these options exist. While traditional activism focuses on resistance, well-being economies focus on replacement. Instead of  fighting against  what doesn't work. W e're building what does work .   Communities across the globe are creat...

Ch. 43 Establishing Justice

"Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." -Martin Luther King, Jr. Justice, in its truest form, means ensuring equal treatment under law for all people, regardless of their differences. Yet in practice, this ideal often falls short, particularly when wealth enters the equation. Consider Michael Steinhardt, a hedge-fund billionaire found with approximately $70 million in illegally obtained art and antiquities. His punishment? The items were returned, and he was barred from collecting art.  No charges were filed. Then there's Kalief Browder, a sixteen-year-old accused of stealing a backpack.  Despite never being convicted or pleading guilty, he spent nearly three years in jail, 800 days in solitary confinement.  Prolonged isolation like solitary confinement causes severe mental and physical damage. Beyond ...
